The Cincinnati Bengals were a playmaking team in the 2020 season, led by former Heisman winner and quarterback Joe Burrow, who finished first in his rookie season. Fans, media and pundits didn’t expect much from the Bengals, who have steadily declined in recent years. The team finished the season at 4-11-1, but they were much more competitive than their record suggested.

One of the most glaring shortcomings of the 2020 Cincinnati Bengals was the poor performance of the offensive line. Burrow often fought for his life and was eventually sidelined for the season with a torn ACL.

Burrow saw production from T. Higgins and Tyler Boyd during his rookie campaign and could use another receiver, but the Bengals’ biggest need is clearly on the offensive line as draft day approaches.

My heart tells me the Bengals will pick Burrow’s former favorite target and LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, but my head tells me they have a chance to pick Oregon tackle Penei Sewell. Frankly, they shouldn’t lose sight of the prospect of a better offensive line in the 2021 NFL Draft. I offer this article in anticipation of the Oregon Professional Day, which will take place on Friday the 2nd. April. This event will be Sewell’s last chance to establish himself as a top offensive line pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Peney Sewell is not expected to be fired by the Bengals. If the Bengals decide to use Ja’Marr Chase or another receiver instead of Penei Sewell, that will be a problem. It’s an official offense! @Foxworth24 in McShay’s last spot draft, where Sewell was selected as #13 pic.twitter.com/QYZH46IeGd

Corresponds to data sheet

Penei Sewell is 5’8″ and weighs 60 pounds (correct information to date). The first thing I noticed when I watched Sewell’s film was that he didn’t discriminate. Whether it’s a defender, linebacker or line player, Sewell will find a way to get to defenders. Sewell has the size, athleticism and footwork of an NFL linebacker. Although the 2019 Outland Trophy winner is choosing to sit out the 2020 college football season, he is a solid first round pick and I would be very surprised if he misses this draft.

In the clip above, you can see how quickly Sewell executes that drop move, goes to the second level and takes out the middle linebacker. Sewell did his job, but Oregon, which had C.J. Verdell’s back, did not. Below is a video of some of Sewell’s best plays during his two-year college career.

The way he can get into space and attack linebackers and defensive backs on screens or traps is really impressive. Sewell’s athletic ability makes him one of the best offensive linemen. Combining those physical skills with his size, hand fighting, hand holding and ability to create holes for his running backs, the 20-year-old is preparing for a promising NFL career.

The Last Season of Penea (2019, sophomore)

As previously mentioned, Sewell decided to go for the 2020 season when the Pac-12 announced there would be no fall sports. Sewell stood by his decision even after the Pac-12 decided to play a shortened football season.

Although 2019 is only his second season in Eugene, it’s mostly about the awards Sewell didn’t win. For starters, Sewell was named the Outland Trophy winner, awarded annually to the best offensive lineman in the country. Sewell was on 13 All-American lists, was named to the coaches’ and media’s All-Pac-12 teams and was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week four times.

His praise for 2019 doesn’t end there, though. Sewell was named to the 12-man team nine times and the PFF team six times. He finished the season with a PFF rating of 95.5, which was good for the highest rated forward in PFF history. Statistically, Sewell allowed no sacks, just 7 pressures and two QB hits in his second season.

Cincy-Bound?

In his short college career, Sewell has earned the respect and appreciation of all his teammates, coaches, fans and media. But can Sewell make the same impression on the Bengals’ front office and coaching staff? It remains to be seen, but he’s the clearest and safest choice at the 5 spot and will be able to make an immediate impact on an offensive line that lacked production last season.

Bengals coach Zach Taylor was scheduled to attend Oregon’s pro day on Friday. Penay Sewell, the expected top tackle, will be among those practicing.

Bengals coach Zach Taylor will be in attendance, as he should be on Sewell’s Pro Day.
