The Chicago Blackhawks star won’t play for the Americans at 2021 World Championship after taking a pass on a chance to play for his country during the IIHF tournament in 2020. It was revealed on Sunday that NHL superstar Patrick Kane will not play for the United States at the 2021 World Championship. The decision is a big deal considering Kane has represented the U.S. over a dozen times in international play, including most recently in the IIHF Inline Hockey Worlds.
Kane was named to Team USA’s roster for the 2016 IIHF World Championships, but illness forced him to withdraw from the team in May before it departed for the tournament. It’s not clear what illness Kane suffered from. Other than that, Kane has never missed an Olympic tournament or a World Championships, so his withdrawal from the 2021 team is a shock to many in the hockey world. One of the most prolific American-born players in NHL history, Kane will leave a huge hole on the team. He is the sixth-highest scorer in league history, with 1,142 points in 1,196 career games.
Patrick Kane announced Tuesday that he will play for the U.S. men’s national team at the World Cup of Hockey. Instead, he plans to spend time with his son, Patrick Kane III, and relax.
The 32-year-old forward led the Chicago Blackhawks in points (66) and assists (51) in a shortened 56-game 2021 season. He achieved this feat while playing with an undisclosed injury that he says will be treated in the offseason.
Kane has 42 points (25 goals, 13 assists) in 25 games in the last three World Cups and was captain in 2018 and 2019. The IIHF has cancelled the 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 World Cup will be held from the 21st. From May to 6. June in Latvia.
Kane wasn’t the only Blackhawks player to turn down the opportunity. Pius Suter said on the 6th. May that he will not play for the Swiss national team because he is a restricted free agent and does not have a contract for the 2021-22 season. The rookie has 14 goals and 27 points in 55 games this season.
Attackers Brandon Hagel (Canada), Dominik Kubalik (Czech Republic) and defender Nikita Zadorov (Russia) confirmed on Tuesday that they will play for their respective countries.
Hagel, who scored 24 points (9 goals, 15 assists) in 52 games during his rookie season, will play his first game for Team Canada. However, Kubalik is not new to international senior competition. He competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 and 2019 World Championships. Zadorov also participated in the 2019 World Cup.
Striker Max Shalunov will play alongside Zadorov in the Russian national team. The Blackhawks selected Shalunov in the fourth round (109th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and still own his rights. The 28-year-old registered 35 points (18 goals, 17 assists) in 52 regular season games and 18 points, including 12 goals, in 22 playoff games for CSKA Moscow. His KHL contract expires and he wants to sign with Chicago.
He’s a great shooter, he scores a lot of goals, Zadorov said of Shalunov. He has a very good shot.
The Blackhawks’ 2020 first-round pick, Lukas Reichel (Germany), will also participate in the World Cup. The 18-year-old attacker has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 38 regular season games and five points (2G, 3A) in nine playoff games for the Berlin Polar Bears, who won the DEL, Germany’s highest division. The World Championships will be her first international tournament at the highest level.
Forward Dylan Strome (Canada) spoke to the media during the Blackhawks’ end-of-season press conference, but did not say he would not play. He said he was going home to Oakville, Ontario, where he had bought a house.
At the 2019 World Cup, Strome recorded five points (one goal, four assists) in 10 games.
Forward Alex DeBrincat (USA) also spoke to the press, but he was not asked if he would play in the World Cup. After his season-high 45 points (18 goals, 27 assists) in 2019-20, DeBrincat has 56 points and 32 goals in 52 games this season. He has 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 18 games over the past two seasons.
Defender Connor Murphy (USA) could be joining DeBrinchat. Murphy played for Team USA at the 2014-18 World Championships, but did not return to action in 2019.
Striker David Kampf and promising defender Jakub Galvas (Czech Republic) are near candidates. Kampf has gradually developed into a reliable fourth line player in the NHL, and Galvas has been on the 6th line. Mai signed with the Blackhawks. Neither player competed in the world championships, but Galvas participated in Czech hockey games with the team.
Swiss striker Philipp Kurashev has four points (one goal, three assists) in eight games at the 2019 World Cup.
Finnish goalie Kevin Lankinen was hockey’s biggest sensation at the 2019 World Cup, averaging 1.50 goals against and a save percentage of .942 en route to a gold medal.
