Brett Connolly and newly acquired Riley Stillman made their debuts, while Nikita Zadorov scored in overtime for the first time this season in Monday night’s 4-3 victory over the Blackhawks.

Both teams were able to light the lamp in the first period, although Columbus controlled most of the game. Stefan Matto of the Blue Jackets broke through the Blackhawks’ defense and scored his first goal of the game with six minutes to play to give his team the lead.

Blackhawks converted topower play

Late in the third period, the Blackhawks responded with their first power play of the game. Duncan Keith beat a broken through Alex DeBrincat to beat the Jackets goalie and make it 1-1.

It was good to see the power play converted, as the Blackhawks only took 10 shots at 5v5 in the first frame and struggled to stay in the offensive zone.

The Blackhawks beat Columbus for the second time in the second period, but there was no indication that a goal wouldn’t fall. The referee lost sight of the puck and the play was scored before the puck crossed the line.

From that point on, nothing happened for the outside team. The Blackhawks produced just six shots on goal in the middle frame, while Columbus forward Patrick Lane gave his team a one-goal lead with a shot from the point.

Blackhawks fail to score after 4 minutes of power play

The Blackhawks got a four-minute power play late in the second period when Jackets forward Max Domi committed two minor fouls on the same shift and received a 10-minute suspension on a jump shot by Connor Murphy.

During a power play that lasted into the third period, the Blackhawks took six shots on goal, but failed to score and struggled to get anything going. Utilizing Stat’s natural trick, the Blackhawks created just one scoring opportunity during the power play.

Blackhawks find life in third period

Trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, the Blackhawks had their hands full. They have only won once this season when they were behind after two periods, but tonight they found a way.

Phillip Kurashev opened the scoring midway through the third. He played less than two minutes with teammate Patrick Kane, but took advantage of the opportunity to take a cross from a future Hall of Famer and score his eighth goal of the season to tie the score at two-all.

Three minutes later, newly acquired Brett Connolly joined the party. In his first game with the Blackhawks, Connolly grabbed the loose puck just inside the blue jacket, passed through the middle and gave his new team its first lead.

With eight minutes to play in the third period, Lane scored his second goal of the game, bringing the score to three and forcing overtime. The Finnish attacker has scored six of his 12 goals for the Blackhawks this season, and this may be his best goal.

Both teams got a point, and the game went to overtime with the score tied at three. The Blackhawks have been in the game since the fifth. March saw no overtime when they beat the Lightning in a shootout.

Future now

It didn’t take long for the Blackhawks to lock up the game.

Starting defender Wyatt Calinook pushed away an attacker on his flank and found Kirby Duch running down the right side. With Kalinook at the top of the net, Duch fed Brandon Hagel, who made no mistakes.

Hagel now has six goals on the season, and none more.

The Blackhawks grabbed the extra point and are now two points behind the Nashville Predators for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central Division.

Unfortunately, Adam Boqvist got a puck in his face on his first shift and never returned.

Colliton says Boqvist has symptoms of a concussion.

The Blackhawks are now 20-18-5 and are just two points away from a playoff berth with 13 games left to play in this short 56-game season.

What now?

The Blackhawks have two days off before heading to Detroit for a two-game series that starts Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Blackhawks are 5-1 against the Red Wings this season, and they need to take all four points if they want to contend for a playoff spot again.
