The Blackhawks lost their fourth game in a row Saturday afternoon. They shot more than the Lightning, but couldn’t get past Andrei Vasilevskiy, who allowed just one goal on 31 shots. The Hawks close out their mid-March road trip with a 1-5 record and return home Tuesday for two games against the Panthers.

Missed opportunity for falcon

It’s not like the Blackhawks don’t already have a good reputation. They were. The Lightning held a 26-17 lead in the first two periods, but could not overcome Wasilewski until the third period.

Midway through the first period, Carl Soderberg was stopped on a breakout when he ran out of time.

Patrick Kane did everything in the offensive zone and finished the game with four shots. For the second game in a row, however, it remained meaningless.

Later in the first period, Brandon Hagel passed the cage with a nice chance, but was unable to score. But Hagel did get a penalty on that play.

The Blackhawks entered the first intermission trailing by one goal, but missed their second goal just two minutes into the middle period and were outscored 5-0 in the first five minutes.

At that point, the Blackhawks had their best chance of the game. Tampa Bay missed two penalties with 38 seconds left, and the Blackhawks held a two-goal lead for nearly a minute and a half.

The NHL’s fourth-best player couldn’t beat Vasilevsky, despite seven shots on the power-play during the game.

Late in the second period, Nikita Zadorov sent Kane on a breakaway for a perfect lead. Kane had more than enough time, but he couldn’t beat Wasilewski from behind.

The Blackhawks had 14 shots, 18 shots on goal and eight scoring chances in the second period, but nothing to show for it.

DeBrincat’s breakthrough in the third.

Five minutes into the third period, with the Blackhawks trailing 4-0, Alex DeBrincat finally put the Blackhawks on the winning track. The Pats now have 16 goals on the season, which is sixth in the NHL. Dominik Kubalik had an assist in that game and now has 15 assists for the season, two fewer than last season.

The Blackhawks registered just five shots in the third period and lost their fourth game in a row 4-1.

Problems with the rebound of the lower bench

Malcolm Subban made 25 saves on 29 shots in the 4-1 loss. He’s conceded 18 goals in his last four games. There wasn’t much to go on Subban’s first two balls into the Lightning. The first goal was scored by Brayden Point, who was alone in front of the net, and the second was a catastrophic defensive error by the Blackhawks on a 4-on-4 defense.

The third and fourth goals were the result of Subban’s rebounding, including this power play goal by Stephen Stamkos late in the second period.

The Blackhawks are now 14-13-5 and have lost seven of their last ten games.

What now?

The Blackhawks return to action on Tuesday for the first time since Game 4. Back home for the first of two games against the Panthers. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time. The Blackhawks have yet to beat the Panthers this season, with a 20-11 record in their four meetings.
