Dwight Howard signed a $2.6 million one-year contract with Philadelphia 76 this week after a particularly strange sequence of events.

It all started late on Friday night when Howard tweeted that he was at the Lakers game in Los Angeles.

Shortly after, the Lakers came out and insisted that Howard had indeed not received a formal offer. As a result, a 34-year-old boy was forced to return and remove his original tweet.

It turned out the Lakers and Howard team were negotiating a possible deal. Los Angeles was slowly playing while Howard took care of everything. When the two parties discussed the large reductions in a 3 million year contract, Howard mistakenly believed that this was what was being offered to him. Hence the tweet.

When the Lakers made it clear that such an offer would not be officially renewed, Howard was forced to switch to Plan B.

The obvious question for everyone was why did the Lakers let him resign from Howard?

Actually, it’s because they didn’t care to quit. According to NBA USA Today insider Mark Medina, Howard’s desired role in the team was not the role General Manager Rob Pelink had in mind.

Pelinka wasn’t worried about losing Dwight Howard because his hopes for a big role went against the team’s plans to use him only when the games asked for it, Medina wrote.

Howard’s desire to play a greater role in the patterns of the team than his current capabilities points to a recurring problem. Similar things have been said about him in recent years during his previous visits.

Last season he averaged 7.5 points and 7.3 rebounds for the underdogs, while in some cases he has been recognized as an important part of some Lakers’ defensive plans.

Nevertheless, the team used them on an ad hoc basis. For example, Los Angeles against the Houston Rockets and Miami Heath made little use in qualifying of two clubs that relied on a small ball to take the lead. Conversely, for Nikola Jokić Howard was a usable big shot in the finals of the Western Conference against the Denver Nuggets.

Instead of Howard Lakers, Harrell signed a contract with Montrezl for $19 million over two years and with Mark Gasol for $5 million over two years.

Last year, Harrell averaged 18.6 points with 58 percent of shots off the field and 7.1 rebounds in 27.8 minutes for the bank game in Los Angeles.

The average fuel score was 7.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists on shots from the field; 42.7%, 38.5% behind the bow and 73.5% of the free-throw line on 44 outs for the Toronto Raptors in 2019-20.

Both men have to do an excellent job to replace Howard’s minimal production and it’s hard to imagine the Lakers doing anything other than upgrading the center in the off-season.

That’s what it looks like: Cam Newton’s stupid answer to his future with the Patriots.
