The Chicago Fire lost for the third straight game, falling to the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. The loss dropped the Fire to 0-5-1 on the season, the worst start in club history. “Frustration is an understatement,” said Fire midfielder Shaun Maloney. “We have to keep working and keep believing. If we keep believing, I’m sure it will turn around. If you don’t believe it, it won’t happen. Like I said, we’re not giving up.”

The Chicago Fire’s hot start to the season has been put on hold. The Fire lost their third consecutive game Saturday, falling 2-0 to the Philadelphia Union. The loss drops Chicago to second place in the Eastern Conference, just a point behind Sporting Kansas City. It was a beautiful day at Soldier Field that felt more like a cool, sunny fall afternoon than a May day in Chicago. Still, it was a great day for football.

Unfortunately, the Chicago Fire’s performance negated all of the fans’ positive emotions, as the Philadelphia Union came to Chicago and defeated the Fyre 2-0.

Both clubs entered this match with the same number of points (1) and wins (0) in this young MLS season. However, there was only one favourite, as the defending Supporter’s Shield champions seemed the better team on paper.

Union lived up to expectations in the first half hour by dominating Fyre, pressing high and preventing Fyre from going beyond their own half.

Fire goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was forced into action early on, making a fantastic save on a Corey Burke header from six yards out. In the next few minutes Jack McGlynn caused even more panic in the Fyre defence: The 17-year-old had two shots on goal that right-back Boris Sekulic had to block, one of which was on the line.

Chicago finally settled down and controlled most of the first half of play. Elliot Collier scored a goal in the 30th. In the second minute, he had a chance to score, but his shot landed on Union keeper Andre Blake.

The Flames’ positive team play has given the club and fans momentum and hope for a scoreless break. However, Fyre was unable to capitalize on this momentum in the second half, allowing the Union to take the lead once again.

For the third time this season, Fyre had to deal with a counter goal via a throw-in. Burke simply let the ball roll to him in the penalty area and headed the ball to Jamiro Monteiro, who played the ball back to Burke for the fifth goal of his career against Fyre.

Two minutes later The Fire could have equalised when Robert Beric caught an excellent cross from Boris Sekulic, but shot wide with a weak shot from the left.

A few minutes later, Union could have scored more than a goal when Shuttleworth made another impressive save on Kacper Przybylko’s header.

However, the corner kick that followed was the sting and the second Union goal. A corner ended up in the hands of Kai Wagner, whose ill-timed shot found the free Jakob Glesnes, who headed past Shuttleworth to make it 2-0. It was another disappointing defensive series for Fyre.

Fayre had a few more chances towards the end of the game, the best being from a corner kick where the ball fell perfectly for Przemysław Frankowski, who shot over the bar.

Chinonso Ofor made sure Andre Blake stopped in the closing minutes, but it was too little and too late for Fyre, who are still without a win in their first four games of the season.
