Former Chicago Bears player Greg Olsen has hung up his boots on the willows for good. The three-time professional bowler announced his retirement prior to the NFC championship game as he plans to join Fox Sports’ NFL coverage.

I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in this league, proud of the relationships and everything this game has given me, Olsen said during the Fox Sports pregame show. But sometimes, when the time is right, the time is right, and my time in the NFL is now over. I look forward to the next chapter…. I unpacked everything.

Olsen played four seasons with the Bears, nine with Carolina and one with Seattle. He had previously planned to retire, but stayed in Seattle hoping to get that one thing that was still missing from his resume: a Super Bowl win.

Thank you to the countless teammates, coaches and staff in Chicago, Seattle and especially Carolina. You have made me the player and the person I am today …. I try not to look back and regret it. I’m very proud of my career. But if you look at my career, I have two. I’m sorry I didn’t make it to the top of the mountain. I regret leaving the field under the weight of confetti, but our dream could not come true.

Olsen had a brilliant career and was a fan favorite in Chicago. In Chicago, he accounted for 194 receptions for 1,981 yards and 20 touchdowns. Olsen was well on his way to becoming one of the best players in Chicago football history, but his career was cut short by the Bears’ decision to contract Mike Martz. Martz’s plan called for a tight lock, and Olsen was known to play with a swing out of the rotation at times.

Fans appreciated Olsen for his efforts on and off the field. The Greg Olsen Foundation launched Reception for Research, an organization that helps improve the lives of people suffering from cancer and cardiovascular diseases or conditions. Both Chicago and Charlotte benefited greatly from this charity during Olsen’s career.

While there is debate over whether or not Olsen deserves a place in the Hall of Fame, he will certainly be remembered as a class act. Good luck to Greg and the Olsen family in their new ventures.
