The 2021 NFL Draft is a month away, and the race for teams to upgrade their rosters has begun. There’s still just over a month to go before the NFL heads to Cleveland for a weekend to celebrate a new batch of pro football stars, but our first two trades for the 2021 NFL Draft are already done.

Today was a busy day for a franchise, as the Miami Dolphins were involved in two transactions that originally included their third pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 in exchange for the 12th pick. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has a summary of the deal below.

Transferred to ESPN: The Dolphins traded the No. 3 pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 12 pick, a third-round pick in 2021 (a pick SF traded for hiring Robert Saleh) and a first-round pick in 2022 and 2023, according to multiple sources.

The move undoubtedly means the 49ers will turn to the quarterback with the newly acquired third pick. However, the Dolphins had two first-round picks and still have them, but one of them will be used at a new position. It won’t be the 12th, though. Indeed, Miami has reached a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 12th pick in Philadelphia in exchange for the 6th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Again: Adam Schefter has the full details of the deal.

The Eagles traded their sixth to the Dolphins at No. 12 and their 2022 first-round pick. Also in the intermediate round, the teams switched places: The Eagles have picked number 156. 123.

Eagle Analysis

The Eagles had previously indicated interest in the second-round pick, but that was in an effort to acquire Zach Wilson. Instead, the Eagles move up to 12th in the draft, which can be taken as a clear indication that they selected a wide receiver in the first round. Whether they have the #6 or #12 pick won’t matter much, since most teams in the top 10 of the draft are more likely to attack other positions.

The Eagles selected Jalen Reagor in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but due to Reagor’s lack of production, the Eagles will likely select the pass catcher again in the first round. The dark spot for this draft spot could be Florida’s Kyle Pitts, who ran a 4.46 40-yard dash this week. He could be a good replacement for Zach Ertz at tight end if the Eagles want to rejuvenate the position. No matter how you look at it, the Eagles want to attack the offensive side of the ball with this pick. There are some talented pass catchers on the 12. The space will be available, and the Eagles were able to add future kickers to the deal, so this trade is sure to benefit both teams involved.

One thing is very clear: Zach Wilson will be at the top of this draft. In number two? It’s quite possible. And it’s hard to imagine anyone having enough ammunition to move up the ranks. https://t.co/U7gAKiJBhj

Dolphin analysis

The Dolphins are now in an interesting position with a sixth pick, in a position where they can go in a number of directions. Tua Tagovailoa didn’t perform at his best last season, but the running back suggests that they won’t pick a quarterback in the first round this year. It’s simple: Miami needs a weapon for Tua. Two of his former teammates, Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith (both wide receivers), could be available at No. 6 and possibly No. 2. 18. The Dolphins could fill the holes on defense with a player like Micah Parsons, or they could bolster the offensive line with a player like Pena Sewell. But with two picks – one at the start of the first round and the other at No. 18 – they are certainly in a good position to significantly improve their shooting skills on game night.

49 analysis

The 49ers are currently in a good position to select a quarterback outside of Trevor Lawrence and possibly Zach Wilson, depending on what the Jets do with the second pick. Wilson will participate in his pro day Friday afternoon, where he should emerge as the second-best quarterback available by the time you’ve read this article. Outside of Wilson, Trey Lance and Justin Fields will likely be available for the No. 3 spot, and they’re pretty intriguing prospects who could fit into Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Alabama quarterback Mack Jones will likely be selected late in the first round, if not in the second, but the 49ers are now in a position to select a replacement for Jimmy Garapolo, as they have announced he will be the starter next season.
